Ticket Redemption - compensation for poor treatment


Hello... My name is Craig Johnson and I'm a Mileage Plus Member VC957792 and I need someone's help. In 2016 I spent the majority of the year flying for business and family connections. In March of 2016 while in Florida I bought a ticket for my son Caleb to come visit me in California because he lives in Evansville, Indiana. A mistake was made and my name Craig Johnson was on the ticket and not my sons. When I inquired about transferring the ticket to Caleb's name I was told it was non-transferable and non-refundable. I was very disappointed but I couldn't afford another ticket so we ended up canceling our plans after not seeing my son for 2 years. I didn't except that answer so I asked to speak with a supervisor. The supervisor was very helpful and understood after all the miles I had flew with United that they would make an exception and allow the $550.00 ticket to be redeemed at a later date. So I contacted United again in January 2017 wanting to redeem the ticket. No one could help me or could find any record of the transaction. Unfortunately I lost my contact and flight information so it made it that more difficult. Hoping again to redeem it on May 28, 2017 I called again to try and find someone to help me. Again unfortunately I received a message that stated the ticket expired one year from the date of purchase. My question to the CSR and his supervisor was why couldn't I redeem it in January of 2017? It was surely before the year expiration. I am very disappointed that United has not been able to help me and they have $550 of my money. Here is my simple request:
Let me take a trip to Wisconsin this June 2017 to see my parents and celebrate my father's 80th birthday. All my family will be there except me because at this point I can't afford to fly. I would ask and pray someone at United Airlines would show me some grace for an innocent mistake and overlook on United Airlines part. Will anyone step up and take responsibility for this wrong? P.S. This may be the last time I see my mother as well because she has Chronic Fatique Syndrome and has failing health and come close to passing away twice since I moved to California.
