leaving an 8 year old left on stand by


I am a travel agent, recently I had a family booked from san Francisco to Orlando, 3 adults and an 8 year old child. the family had been booked for several months, had seat assignments together and all was suppose to be good. when they checked in the 8 year old had been put on standby and his seat was given away. the family was devastated. they had to wait in anticipation until the end of boarding when others had given up their seats for 1,000.00 and a first class seat on another flight. really!!!! did united expect the family to leave the 8 year old behind ........ what are they thinking.
