United Airlines "Hidden" Fees - Mileage Plus Reservation Cancellation
Was just charged $75 dollars for cancelling a Mileage Plus reservation, which I made on behalf of my wife to visit her ailing father. When the situation with her father shifted, I cancelled the reservation within the 24 hour "grace" period. My MP miles will be refunded to me as will $36 of the $111 that I was charged for booking a flight using my miles.
Did the agent who helped me with the reservation explain that the 24-hour cancellation policy, would cost me $75? (Must have slipped her mind.) I only learned this when I went on line to cancel the reservation. I can understand the airlines charging a fee for cancelling reservations, to discourage its customers from making willy nilly reservations, or because they want to hedge their bets to find lower fares, but in our case the decision to make the reservation, and then cancel it, were both born our of necessity.
At the very least it would be nice to know from UA what justifies this amount, and to be upfront about it right when they list or mention the policy. Is that to much to ask?
